Pulling The Upset

Every week you can make your predictions for Sunday, and it’s clear that if you pick all the favorites I can guarantee you will get a few games  wrong. As last week the chargers beat the packers, upsets happen every single week in the NFL and any other sport. If someone had told me before Sunday 10th that the 1-7 Falcons would beat the 7-1 Saints at the Superdome or that Ryan Tannehill would spoil Patrick Mahomes Comeback, I may have made a bet with him.

The truth is, put the best team against the worst team, and the difference between will be:
play-calling, execution, and X-factor plays and that will determine the winner, but the difference between a 7-1 and 1-7 teams is not abysmal, it is minimal.

I have listed below some of the outcomes from week 10:

Titans spoil Mahomes comeback from Injury.

A great team has an identity defined, but the identity cannot be a single person.  Let’s take a look at successful teams: Baltimore Ravens, yes, they have Lamar Jackson, the identity is not only Lamar, It is the good head coaching, the persistent running game and the good defense. Tom brady has been the face of the franchise for the patriots for too long, but he has not done it alone. This year the patriots have one of the best defenses in the league, they do things on special teams as well, and of course they have Belichick.

Kansas City is Patrick Mahomes… that’s it. Mahomes is carrying the team. The defense can’t stop the run. Remove Tyrek Hill and they are in serious issues. Now, they faced a Good solid Titans team on the road, surprisely better with Tannehill, and in the end what is the outcome:
A missed last-second Fieldgoal that led to a defeat. Execution.

Are the Saints better with Terry bridgewater?

For the last 12 years we can mention 3 things: New England wins, Chicago defense create turnovers and New Orleans Saints Offense is dynamic and consistent.
We tend to stick with that Brand when something is persistent for so many years.
If you look at the saints, since week 13 of 2018, New Orleans Saints offense has been really bad.
New Orleans ranked 22nd on offense from week 13-17 of 2018. Against the Rams week 2, First drive: interception; second drive: 3&Out before leaving injured. They start the season, Brees went down and Terry Bridgewater led the Saints to a 5-0 W streak. Drew Brees was sacked 5 times against the falcons, worst, they only scored 9 points. Would that scenario happened with Terry Bridgewater? Obviously Brees will remain as starter and we will eventually know the outcome.

The chance of getting an upset between divisional games are higher due to they play twice each year. But honestly, who would’ve thought the 1-7 Falcons will go to the superdome and win by 17 points.

There are games when there is a favorite but the margin is thin. Rams losing to the steelers was disappointing but not enough to call it an upset, since the steelers have a 4-Win Streak now and played at home. Cleveland also played home and they play better than the record they have, so no real upset against the bills. I cannot mention upset on the Dolphins-Colts game, as Brian Hoyer almost started the season as the 3rd string QB on the roster. Who you think it will upset on Week 11? If your team is not the favorite, you have a reason to trust on it.
